The Blacksmith’s Shop
by Joseph Wright of Derby
Oil on Canvas, 1771

Bonnefond is one of the 18th Century artists who pushed against the classical tradition, choosing instead to paint scenes out of every day life and contemporary history. In this painting, he depicts a farrier in a forge, as could be encountered in the countryside. Other artists also represented this theme, most notably Joseph Wright of Derby whose painting was then translated into Mezzotint by Richard Earlom.
