On Friday, a day of prayer and rest, I am walking on the banks of the Zayandeh, the river that traverses Iran before disappearing into the Dast-e-Kavir. I cross the old bridge, Khaju which straddles the river. The bridge has two levels, the lower level spanning the stone arches and providing passageways from one end to the other.
I am attracted by the a capella singing of a group of men who gather in this historic place to sing the classic poems of the Persian culture. Age 10 to 80, they take turns one after the other — without ceremony but respectfully — showing off their virtuosity and knowledge of the words.
The acoustics belong to the ancient architecture of the archways: overarching! I am spell bound for more than two hours, seated on the stone, long enough to catch a cold. I leave with my nose dripping but a day well-spent and an indelible memory.
Un vendredi, jour de prière et de repos, je me ballade sur les rives du Zayandeh, la rivière qui traverse Ispahan (Iran) avant de disparaître dans le Dasht-e-Kavir. L’ancien pont Khaju l’enjambe, je l’emprunte pour traverser. Il a deux niveaux, le niveau inférieur longe les arches de pierres, avec des passages de part et d’autre du pont.
Je suis attiré par des chants a capella d’hommes réunis en ce lieu chargé d’histoire pour chanter les poètes classiques de la culture perse. Agés de dix à quatre-vingts ans, ils se succèdent sans cérémonie, mais respectueusement, pour faire entendre leur virtuosité et leur connaissance des mots. L’acoustique est propre aux architectures anciennes à voûtes : envoûtante ! Je reste sous le charme pendant plus de deux heures, assis sur la pierre, le temps d’attraper froid. Je repars la goutte au nez mais la journée gagnée et le souvenir indélébile.
