I had been painting up at the Curtis farm surrounded by turkeys, pigs, sheep, and chickens, all running free in the fields. Here were farm animals destined for the table, yet having a great life before. They inspired me to do a “Pigs with dignity” series.

Gill, As far as I know, these animals are all killed right there on the farm. My grandson and I went up to get a turkey one Thanksgiving and were taken with the bloody barn wall and the killing log. He had a much deeper appreciation for meat when we reached into a watering trough of ice water and brought home a freshly killed turkey pulling out the pin feathers and salting down the bird.

Nice. As a vegetarian I’m glad at least that these animals are raised well. Next step is getting them to be killed humanely and on their own home land.
