Peter Davenport created Wheels Gone By as a memorial to Jay Hird , Charlet’s mother. The first summer Jay was gone, Peter chose a spot on the western side of the southern field where the last light appeared in mid August, in honor of her birthday. He installed a simple structure on this location, which he created from old wheel rungs he had discovered on the property. Wheels Gone By moves very subtly and stands as a marker at the edge of the busy and lively space of Sculpturefest land.
