Well, it seems to be tornado week so here is another one. And this one is rather surface oriented as well but that particular shape, that funnel, I painted over and over and over to get what I call a kind of “witch’s finger.” And funny, a critic in the Washington Post, unprompted, called it a kind of “witch’s finger” so I must have hit on something. Sue Greenwood Fine Art of CA got me a showing of tornado paintings at the National Academy of Sciences (turns out they have quite an art thing going on) and the NAS actually purchased this painting. I was very excited of course to be taken so seriously by such an entity. I found out too that the NAS was started by Abe Lincoln in 1863. Never knew that.

But this piece is also one of my more “mature” tornado paintings and done out of my head – my only reference was a Chopin piece of the same name.

I was also beginning to look at A. Pinkham Ryder at this point.

It is 60 inches tall and completed in 2006.

Beautiful piece! I love how you always get that little slice of life about to be altered forever in there. The colors that give the feel of night are perfect.

Absolutely extraordinary piece, John. I’m sure Chopin would be honored with your choice of title. I see this as a very sensuous painting……
