Gouache on Paper
20 × 6 inches

Copy_right Ruprecht von Kaufmann

At first this drawing wasn’t intended as part of the series of felt paintings. It came into being as one of many drawings that I made in preparation of the felt series. The intention was to develop the new visual language of strong white and black contrasts. with hardly and mid tones or modulations. But because I really liked the image I decided to make a larger version of it on felt.

I love love love it. And, I appreciate having the three different shots to view it. All are striking!

You are quite right of course, the proportions don’t add up. It’s a spelling mistake though. It should be 20 × 11 inches. Thanks.

Is some of the drawing not seen here? The proportions don’t seem like 20 × 6, I love the simplicity, though.

I really love this piece, Ruprecht! The noise of the water is fascinating.

What I found out half ways into this drawing is how hard it is to paint water with no mid-tones and no color. I once read about a saying in Chinese art: one must be able to paint a peach in black and white so that the viewer will see it in color in his head, and will have the smell in his nose. I am not even going to attempt that one.

sure!
