David Madzo is a Minneapolis artist originally from North Dakota. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Dakota.Madzo’s work is wholly contemporary while at the same time full of symbols and archetypes reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Says Madzo, “Artists are chroniclers or detailers of their times within the confines of their studio but they also access a whole history of paintings … I have a moral responsibility to maintain that tradition.”
You can’t look at Madzo’s pieces without being challenged to interpret them. They speak of isolation apathy fate and survivorship. Some figures are often placed in nebulous, vague backgrounds, some without a horizon line- removing the reference to any identifiable place, and thus emphasizing the isolation of the character or characters.
