A photo has an advantage over film in terms of freezing time. It takes a slice of life, permitting its leisurely observation. Even better than slowing down time, a photo stops it, highlighting the space occupied by an object.
Like a sculptor removes all the material superfluous to the sculpture, in order to extract the essence that’s revealed only once the excess is stripped away,
a photographer eliminates superfluous dimensions of reality (time, depth of color…),
Here, the photo freezes the man in a statuesque pose, unreal although an extract of the real, false although a product of the true, strange although natural. A photo’s suspension of time, provides an opportunity for the subjective observation of the real separated from time.
