I made this series of drawings after experiencing the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, where I was residing at the time. I was already annoyed by my peer’s slavish enthusiasm for the simplistic will.i.am video “Yes We Can”, and when Shepard Fairey showed up touting his poster and Robert Indiana rolled out a piece based on Hope as well, I’m afraid that a touch of cynicism entered my being. These variations on Mr. Indiana seemed to capture the essence of America more accurately that the the scenario unfolding before me. I’m afraid I’m starting to lose my enthusiasm for all things political, or even vaguely positive, at my old age. It actually feels quite good.
