This image by Vermeer was an important inspiration for Champagne. It depicts a gentleman plying an already tipsy woman with more wine. Dutch genre paintings are much more risque than most people think. This painting probably depicts a scene in a whore house, though why he’d have to get a prostitute drunk to have sex is beyond me. I love the way the woman’s back and the chair interact with the blank space of the wall behind her. I’ve always found the gal’s face to be especially odd in Vermeer’s work, and have read that this is due to a bad restorer. I wanted that crazy, drunk look in my models face, and feel I got something close.
