Lightning over Water
Hesspalehorse

I enjoyed painting Dark Horse so much that I wanted to do another equestrian piece. What would its opposite be, but still use the same basic content? A black woman on a white horse… in the tropics… at night… during a thunderstorm! The same great model I used in Suzie Q rides this horse (in the studio she rode the back of my couch), and the background is invented. I did find reference for the various plants in the foreground, collaging them from numerous shots of tropical gardens.

“The Rashomon effect is the effect of the subjectivity of perception on recollection, by which observers of an event are able to produce substantially different but equally plausible accounts of it. A useful demonstration of this princip...

I thought the eye of the horse was pretty cool… you can see the trees reflected from the viewer’s side of the picture plane.

Dark Horse is pretty straight forward, though the possible readings are many. I was aware of a few background stories, like Lady Godiva, but really I just wanted to paint a horse, and get a great sense of movement. I think I succeeded th...
