Painted in 2012, this image depicts me fighting myself. I suspect it is a common occurrence in most studios. I was never happy with the title. Any suggestions?
I’ve rearranged my museum, and put all the work that was in my 2011 exhibition at Koplin Del Rio Gallery into one collection, bearing the title of that show, In Transit. It is now possible to view that exhibit in its entirety, with the exception of the title piece, In Transit, a 7 × 12 foot piece that remains unfinished.
Painted following the September death of my biological father, Above An Irish Sea was a calculated response that was a bit naive on my part. I imagined that floating him free of the earth might resolve the issues that surround that long ago divorce of my parents and the 32 year absence of this man from my life. That didn’t work, of course, but the attempt resulted in a beautiful painting.
Even as I painted this piece I felt like I was riffing on Norman Rockwell. If only I had painted in some smiling, buck-toothed boys the homage would have been complete.
Progress has slowed down as I hit the detail in the figures. A shot of what I worked on in included in the tabs.
Progress Report: Foliage. I am sick of foliage. All day today (15 hours in the studio), all day yesterday, and probably all day tomorrow. Foliage! I’ve painted every leaf the whole damn forrest!
The canvas is covered, except for the plates. I haven’t decided what to serve for breakfast… a fancy breakfast out in nature. Hmmm.
Check out the progress on this painting. Day five is done, tomorrow I’ll try to cover the canvas. Deadline of August 20th.
Bocaccio’s Decameron and Botticelli’s Nastagio degli Onesti series served as the source material for this 46 × 54 inch canvas. Images of the stages of painting will be posted as they are completed. Deadline is August 20th. Paint ’til you drop, Fool!
