F. Scott Hess Museum : The American Scene
The American Scene
These works were completed after my return from a six year stint in Vienna, Austria. I was thrilled to be back, and found the refineries, freeways, and strip malls of Los Angeles very inspiring. Social and political in content, these works nevertheless derived mostly from autobiographical incidents, observations, or extrapolations of both of these. The dark sensibility I’d cultivated in Vienna, mixed with the technicolor of Los Angeles, created an odd synthesis that no one had seen in LA painting. The works are generally very large, oil on canvas, and do not sit quietly on any wall.
